The Salish Sea is the unified bi-national ecosystem that includes
Washington State’s Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the San
Juan Islands as well as British Columbia’s Gulf Islands and the Strait
of Georgia.
We have unique opportunities to educate students and our
communities about the value of protecting shellfish, marine
resources and water quality. Shellfish fit into the context of
environmental science, biology, paleontology, archaeology, geography,
gardening and nutrition. Students are engaged and inspired by
interacting with shellfish through hands-on activities, experiments,
artwork and field experience. Sharing with others relates the global
nature of shellfish and our connectedness to ocean life around the
world. We are fortunate to have Puget Sound and the Salish Sea as
our home and laboratory. from Puget Sound
